Twister that hit Oklahoma caused $2 bn in damage

MOORE, Oklahoma - Rescue workers were combing through the battered remains of buildings left behind in the path of the gigantic tornado that killed two dozen people, including nine children, in Oklahoma on Monday.

Officials say the search for survivors is nearly over as efforts turn towards recovery.

Gary Bird, fire chief of the badly hit Moore suburb, said he was "98% sure" there were no more survivors or bodies to recover from the rubble.

The storm has meanwhile been upgraded to the most powerful level of twister.

Packing winds of at least 200mph (320km/h), the tornado razed a swathe of Moore, a suburb of Oklahoma City.

The tornado that tore destroyed or damaged as many as 13,000 homes and may have caused $2 billion in overall damage, officials said Wednesday.

State authorities meanwhile said two infants were among the 24 people who perished in the twister.

President Barack Obama will travel to Oklahoma on Sunday to inspect the damage from Monday's deadly tornado and meet with victims from the ravaged communities, the White House announced on Wednesday.

The president made similar visits in recent months to New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy, Connecticut after the Newtown school shooting, Boston after the marathon bombing and Texas after a fertilizer plant explosion, reports NYT. ...
